Geoff Green was named 2007 Fireman of the Year during the Malad Volunteer Firemen’s annual banquet held Saturday, December 15, prior to the annual Firemen’s Ball. Last year’s recipient Doug Crowther made a special “Fireman of the Year” plaque and presented it to Green, who said the award was a total surprise.
Holding up the plaque, Green said, “I knew that Doug was making this, but I didn’t know it was for me.”
Speaking of Geoff’s contribution to the department, Doug said the current Fire Chief is always willing to go the extra mile and help out any way he can. “He’s really a asset,” he added.
At the conclusion of the banquet, Fire Chief Green highlighted some of the year’s happenings which totaled 63 incidents, including 38 grass/wildland fires, 9 car fire, and 7 structure fires.
During the year, Green said the Department was able to get new batteries for its Kenwood radios as well as a new ladder for truck #1. Additionally, Brad Hess and Red Monte Thomas made arrangements for the Holbrook Fire Department to get a 1996 Ford brush truck, which will really help out west.
Thanks to money from a Homeland Security Grant, Green said that firemen now have three new pagers and three Bendix King radios that will allow them to communicate with federal and state agencies out in the field. This will solve many of the coordination problems that have arisen in the past. HSG money was also used to purchase a new generator with lights.
During Fire Prevention Month in October, Green said Malad firemen visited with over 200 elementary school students about fire safety and what firemen do to fight fires.
Six members of the Fire Department also completed three days of Fire School in Burley last February. Additionally, a Fire Department fundraiser for Todd Jones last summer during the 4th of July festivities was successful in helping the injured fireman with some of his medical expenses.
Green thanked Brad Hess for being willing to go beyond the normal tenure and stay on as fire chief for three years. He said the Department is still working on getting a new building as well as getting the city and county combined into a fire district.
